Corrections are in contempt of Parliament: MP Faris’ lawyer
Court gave permission to Faris to attend Committee session
Dhiggaru Constituency MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon in Court on Monday
Maumoon Hameed, lawyer for Dhiggaru Constituency MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon, says that Department of Corrections was in contempt of the Parliament, for having transferred the lawmaker to Maafushi against instructions.
Parliament Committee on Petitions had passed to halt their sessions until MP Faris, who is a committee member, is allowed to attend the Committee sittings.
MP Faris was transferred to Maafushi under Corrections Department administration following his hearing earlier on Monday.
In today’s hearing, MP Faris had requested permission to attend Parliament and Committee sessions. On this request, the Court had passed to delay hearings of the case to 5pm. Prosecution did not raise any objections. The Court stated that transferring MP Faris to Parliament was the responsibility of Corrections.
However, MP Faris was transferred to Maafushi jail following the hearing.
Clause 205 of the Constitution says that any MP who’s under arrest must be allowed to attend Parliament and Committee sessions.
