MDP extends deadline to run for 2024 parliamentary election on the party's ticket

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has extended the deadline opened for the members of the party, to run for the 2024 parliamentary election on the party's ticket.

MDP opened up the opportunity to run for the 2024 parliamentary election on the party's ticket on 16 December 2023. The deadline for applications was first set on 25 December 2023, 04:00 pm.

The party has now extended the deadline to 30 December 2023, 04:00 pm.

During a presser held on 16 December, to make this announcement, the Deputy Chairman of the party. Ibrahim Waheed stated that the party will be holding primary elections for the constituencies where primaries should be held, on 26 and 27 January 2023.

Waheed noted that only those who have expressed interest to run for the 2024 parliamentary election on the party's ticket, before application deadline can take in the primary election.

The requirements for anyone wishing to run on the MDP ticket have also been made public by the party. These include being a member of the MDP and meeting all the requirements stipulated in Article 73 of the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives and Article 8 of the Parliamentary Elections Act.

The party has also requested interested candidates to submit their criminal records along with their application form.

The party has also requested all those interested in running for the parliamentary election on its ticket to express their interest through Google Form.

Waheed continued by saying that additional factors to be taken into account include the services provided by the candidate to the party, duration as a member of the party, as well as the guidelines outlined in the party rules. He noted that if the candidate have worked against the MDP presidential candidate or the party's principles, they will be investigated.

Waheed stated that those who worked against the party's presidential candidate, during the 2023 Presidential Election will not be given the party's ticket for the upcoming parliamentary election.
