Applications have been opened for the post of Commissioner of Police.

In a statement, the home ministry revealed that officers who are currently ranked Assistant Commissioners and higher, will be eligible for the post of Commissioner of Police.

The ministry revealed that interested officers may forward their applications before 12pm, December 19.

According to the Police Services Act, an officer ranked Assistant Commissioner or higher, has to be appointed as a Police Commissioner.

The appointment will be made after the Police Board conducts interviews of applicants.

Further, the appointment will be made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, following recommendations from the minister on the basis of the names recommended to the minister by the Police Board.

Mohamed Hameed retired from his position as Commissioner of Police on November 15.

During his tenure, the country observed his resilient hard work with the quality of services that are accepted, believed and trusted particularly when it comes to police institutions around the globe, especially Interpol intelligence.

Hameed’s efforts to lead the MPS and prepare the people for the second generation were heroic and committed.

Further, his efforts to open the Police Academy, also known as the National College of Policing and Law Enforcement, define a syllabus, system and structure and designating it as an independent body of the police institution were applaudable.

At his retirement ceremony, Hameed urged police officers to ensure that the dignity of the institution is shouldered by every employee, at a time he retired from the service which he holds close to his heart. Hameed added that he would always be on the forefront of the police institution’s efforts to make the Maldives a crime-free, safe and secure place for its citizens.

Hameed was presented with a plaque of honor and a retirement card. The police flag was also hoisted in his honor.
