VP stresses on urgent need for global solidarity in addressing environmental challenges

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef at the Roundtable on the Future of Human Rights, Environment, and Climate of the Human Rights 75 event

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has stressed on the urgent need for global solidarity in addressing environmental challenges for all, across the globe.

VP Latheef made these remarks at the roundtable on the Future of Human Rights, Environment, and Climate of the Human Rights 75 high-level event in Geneva, Switzerland.

Shedding light on the topic of adaptation of economic models and resource mobilization, VP Latheef noted that the realization of the right to life is obstructed by issues related to climate change and that a humanitarian issue lies at the core of the climate crisis.

He went on to note that the widespread unawareness of the close connection between environmental protection and human rights, was a massive challenge.

Highlighting that using solid facts to close this knowledge gap is necessary, VP Latheef noted that promoting policy changes was vital to incorporate human rights issues into financial decisions.

Further, he noted that in order to complement economic and business models by taking that includes structural adjustments, cultural shifts, and international cooperation, a multifaceted strategy is required.

VP Latheef also stated that adopting more environment friendly methods was a sign of changing mindsets in contemporary business endeavors.

The Maldivian vice president also shed light on the importance of structural modifications encircling adjustments to legislative frameworks and procedures.

He added that the island nation recognizes every citizen’s right to a healthy and ecologically-balanced environment.

The vice president stressed that multilateral cooperation is vital for robust climate action and stressed the need to harmonize ecologically sound practices at the global level.

The roundtable is one of four high-level roundtables organized by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights during the high-level event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
