The Vice President met the Deputy Prime Minister of Cuba on Monday

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has discussed the bilateral relations established between Maldives and Cuba, with Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Cuba Inés María Chapman Waugh.

The discussions were held on Monday as part of the Maldivian vice president’s official visit to Geneva, Switzerland, to participate in the high-level event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Human Rights 75).

The high-level Human Rights 75 event was held from December 11 – 12.

Discussions at the meeting revolved around the collaboration between Maldives and Cuba in the United Nations system, as Cuba currently holds the chairmanship of the Group of 77 (G77) and China.

VP Latheef and the Deputy PM of Cuba engaged in discussions regarding the bilateral ties enjoyed between the two countries.

Discussions also touched upon avenues of cooperation, including technical and economic development cooperation, environment, and climate change as well as cooperation in the Human Rights Council.

VP Latheef expressed appreciation the Maldivian government has for the government of Cuba, for the continued assistance and support it has provided in improving the health sector through the facilitation of doctors and training opportunities.

The Cuban Deputy PM assured the Maldivian VP that Cuba remains committed to continue providing support to the island nation, in significant socioeconomic development areas.

The meeting was concluded with the Maldivian VP and Cuban Deputy PM expressing mutual hope to solidify the existing bilateral relations between the two countries, in the future as well.
