Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has expressed grave concern over the United Nations Security Council (UNSC)’s failure to act swiftly and decisively in connection with the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza.

The Maldivian vice president made this remark while speaking to Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the State of Palestine Riad Al-Malki during a meeting held on Monday.

The meeting was held as part of the Maldivian vice president’s official visit to Geneva, Switzerland, to participate in the high-level event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Human Rights 75).

Extensive discussions were held regarding the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza, at the meeting.

VP Latheef assured the Palestinian minister that the Maldives stands in profound solidarity with the people of Palestine in their struggle to achieve independence.

Highlighting that the Maldivian government has in the strongest of terms condemned the violent attacks and Israeli aggression against the people of Palestine on several occasions, VP Latheef assured that the Maldives government will stand unwavering in its support for the people of Palestine in their legitimate quest for inalienable rights, including self-determination.

Maldives and Palestine established diplomatic relations on 4 April 1982.

Maldives has held a long-standing position of support towards the Palestinian statehood.
