Renewable energy will define the future of Maldives, says President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

The president said this while speaking to press, after returning home following the conclusion of his first official trips abroad since assuming officer on November 17, to Turkey and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

President Muizzu wrapped up his trip to UAE and returned on Sunday afternoon.

Speaking to press, the president stated that renewable energy will shape the future of the Maldives under the leadership of the current government.

Expressing 100 percent certainty that this goal would be accomplished, the president emphasized on the need for a transition into a sustainable energy system for attaining sustainable development.

Highlighting that spending USD 750 million from the state budget every year was not a preferable trajectory, President Muizzu revealed two important decisions of his administration, announced at COP28.

He particularly shed light on the government’s commitment to develop renewable energy systems capable of providing 33 percent of the nation’s electrical needs, throughout the next five years.

He also shed light on the announcement of a national drive to plant five million trees across the scatter of islands comprising the Maldives which will in turn reinforce the country’s vision to become a nation centered on sustainable energy with a green and clean atmosphere.

Expressing optimism regarding the administration’s success in attracting foreign investments through multiple meetings held during his visit to Turkey, President Muizzu noted that the benefits of the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) are open to all parties.

The Maldivian president noted that the government will remain committed to provide opportunities, specifically in sectors concerning sustainable energy and climate adaptation investments.
