Cannot pass Anil’s no confidence vote: MP Falah

Forty-three MPs need to vote in favor to boot out AG

Filed with signatures of 24 MPs

Case filed on Thursday

Ruling Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) Deputy Leader and Inguraidhoo Constituency MP Ibrahim Falah has said that even though the opposition had filed the no confidence vote on Attorney General Mohamed Anil, they will not be successful in that attempt.

The no confidence motion on Anil was filed to Parliament on Thursday with signatures from 24 MPs.

Falah said the opposition’s claims in filing the no confidence motion on Anil was based on unfounded allegations. He said the no confidence vote was filed as Anil was the most active person in defending this administration.

Stressing that the opposition had not been able to show any substantial proof to back their claims, Falah said that vote will not be passed.

Parliament laws dictate that if a no confidence motion on a Cabinet Minister is sent to the Parliament, the said Minister must be notified of the debate 14 days before the debate. The Minister will be given the opportunity to present a written statement and he will be able to speak in the session.

Forty-three MPs must vote in favor of the motion in order to pass the motion.

The no confidence motion came following the controversial move sent in by Attorney General, which criminalizes floor crossing and strips sitting MPs from their Parliament seats. AG Anil received strong criticism for this motion.
