The remand period for Ali Shahid, who is accused of holding someone hostage and theft, has been extended.
The Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed that his remand period was extended for a period of 10 days, from Thursday.
According to the police, a case of a man being held hostage illegally, tortured and forced to transfer funds from his bank account by a group of people, was reported on August 4 at a residence in the congested capital, Malé City.
Shahid, also known as ‘Step Ayya’, was arrested on August 29.
Upon being presented to the Criminal Court for his remand hearing on August 30, the suspect was remanded for a 15-day period.
