The United States will not get involved in the Maldivian elections, for one side or other, says United States Senator, Chris Van Hollen.
Senator Van Hollen made these remarks while talking with Maldivian journalists, during a press roundtable, held at the Hotel Jen, on Monday.
The Senator said that the US government stands ready to work with whoever is elected by the people of the Maldives and noted that the democratic process leaves that decision to the people of the Maldives.
The United States' government has a very firm position when it comes to democratic elections, in other countries, whether its the Maldives or another country. Which is that we want free and fair elections, but the United States stands ready to work with whoever is elected by the people of the Maldives and that is our very very clear position, that we don't get involved in elections, for one side or other, because the democratic process leaves that decision to the people of the Maldives,United States Senator, Chris Van Hollen
Noting that the government of the United States has a very firm position when it comes to democratic elections, Senator Van Hollen highlighted that the US wants free and fair elections whether it’s the Maldives or another country.
The Senator noted that this is the very clear position of the United States' government, and that they work hard to make sure to abide by that.
Senator Van Hollen went onto note that the US is beginning their presidential election season and highlighted that the Maldives and the US share the commitment to strengthening democracy.
