President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has wrapped up his brief tour of Shaviyani atoll, to officially launch his campaign for re-election in the 2023 presidential poll.
The Maldivian leader departed on the tour at 7am on Sunday and his first destination was Komandoo island.
During a small gathering with the island community, the president pledged to develop an airport on Kudafaru island of Shaviyani atoll. He also assured the public that the families stranded in Syria, will be brought back to the Maldives by the end of August. The president also remarked that efforts were underway to link Komandoo and Mathi Komandoo and that it is expected to be completed by the end of July.
The second destination of the president’s tour was Maroshi. Speaking to the island community, President Solih pledged to construct 50 housing units for the island community and initiate a road development project alongside completing the already underway development projects on the island.
President Solih headed to Noomara island as his third leg of the tour.
His next destination was Foakaidhoo island, where he inaugurated several development projects initiated as part of his presidential pledges.
The development projects inaugurated on Sunday include the water and sewerage network, the island’s newly upgraded harbor, the healthcare center expansion project as well as the island’s newly developed football field.
The president held gatherings in all four islands as part of the campaign tour and engaged with the island communities. He was accorded a warm welcome upon arrival at all four islands.
The president poured pledges onto the island communities during the tour, stating that the government would carry out more development projects if he is elected for a second term.
A special gathering was held in Foakaidhoo at 9pm on Sunday, to officially launch his re-election campaign. Taking the podium at the event, President Solih stated that as his five-year term comes to a conclusion, the coalition formed with the ruling party to elect his administration had remained intact.
The president concluded his brief campaign tour and returned to the capital city a little past 3:30am on Monday.
Members of the Cabinet including Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid, Minister of Defense and National Security Mariya Ahmed Didi, and others as well as top political figures including MP for Kaashidhoo constituency Abdulla Jabir, MP for Meedhoo constituency and leader of the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) Ahmed Siyam Mohamed accompanied the president during the campaign tour.
