President Solih heads to Singapore on unofficial visit

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is headed to Singapore on an unofficial visit.

The Maldivian leader departed on the unofficial visit from Velana International Airport (VIA) on Thursday.

His last unofficial trip to Singapore was in February 2023. Prior to that, he visited Singapore in October 2022.

Spokesperson at the President’s Office, Miuvan Mohamed revealed that the president will end his brief Singapore trip and return home on Saturday.

The president made four trips to Singapore in 2022, the first being from February 10 – 15 and the second being from February 23 – March 6.

First Lady Fazna Ahmed accompanied the president during all three visits, however, did not join him on the trip in October.

Earlier, the president highlighted that the purpose of his frequent trips to Singapore was to seek medical treatment for Thyroid, following recommendation from doctors.

On 24 February 2022 during the second trip, the president underwent thyroid surgery following doctors’ advice. After a successful surgery, the president and his spouse returned to Maldives on 6 March 2022.

As required by law, at the time, the presidential responsibilities were temporarily transferred to Vice President Faisal Naseem, as stipulated under Article 126 of the Maldives’ Constitution.

Following a successful surgery, President Solih resumed his official presidential duties the same day.

President Solih took a third trip to Singapore from April 14 – 17, last year.

Although doctors had advised him to rest after the surgery, the president continued to fulfil his presidential duties and holding meetings as well as gatherings and events, upon his return.
