Vice President Faisal Naseem has paid a courtesy call on President of the People's Republic of Bangladesh Mohammad Shahabuddin.

The Maldivian vice president called on the Bangladeshi President as part of his visit to Dhaka, Bangladesh, to attend the sixth Indian Ocean Conference (IOC) 2023 which took place from May 12 – 13.

During the meeting held at the Bangladeshi Presidential Palace, Bangabhaban, VP Naseem conveyed felicitations on behalf of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to the Bangladeshi President on his appointment as the new President of Bangladesh.

The meeting saw VP Naseem and the Bangladeshi President engaging in discussions regarding the four and a half decades of diplomatic relations between Maldives and Bangladesh.

Other topics of mutual interest were also discussed at the meeting.

Diplomatic relations were established between Maldives and Bangladesh on 22 September 1978.

Themed around "Peace, Prosperity, and Partnership for a Resilient Future", the IOC 2023 hosted in the capital city of Bangladesh, aimed to bring together key stakeholders to chart the roadmap to strengthen regional cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region.

IOC 2023 saw VP Naseem delivering his remarks, during which he highlighted that preserving the peace and security in the Indian Ocean region is a key foreign policy priority of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

As part of his brief visit to Bangladesh, VP Naseem was scheduled to hold meetings with high-level dignitaries as well. He earlier held a meeting with the Maldivian community residing in Bangladesh as part of the trip.

The vice president also attended a dinner hosted by Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina at the Intercontinental Hotel on Friday.

Sheikh Hasina hosted the dinner in honor of the visiting foreign dignitaries attending the sixth IOC.
