The Council of Jumhooree Party (JP) has unanimously given approval to give their presidential ticket to the party leader Qasim Ibrahim.
This was decided at the council meeting held on Monday.
As such, it was passed that Qasim Ibrahim is qualified to run for the Presidency of Maldives, in the ticket of Jumhooree Party.
Last Thursday, Qasim announced that he will be running for the upcoming Presidential Election 2023, as the Presidential Candidate of the party.
This was disclosed in a letter Qasim sent to the party's Secretary General Ali Arif.
In his letter, Qasim noted that no one had submitted application to run on the party ticket before the end of the announced period, despite the fact that there are many candidates in the party who are qualified to run for president.
He went onto say that he made the decision to run for Presidency in 2023 on behalf of the party.
Jumhooree Party is a partner of the current coalition administration.
Qasim has made the announcement to run for President, while President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih has invited the coalition partners to form a unity agreement for the upcoming 2023 Presidential Election.
The government has said that JP's decision to run for Presidency separately will not pose as a challenge to President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih's position.
