Four names for Broadcom sent for committee review
At a time Amjad’s term is coming to an end, member Ahmed Gais had resigned back in January 2023
According to Section 6(b) of the Broadcasting Act, 2010, the president is tasked with the responsibility of sending nominees for appointment to the Maldives Broadcasting Commission
Applications were opened for membership at Broadcom under Section 6(b) of the Broadcasting Act

Four names have been forwarded to the People’s Majlis for approval to be appointed to the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom).

The letter addressed to the People’s Majlis by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih notes that Amjad Waheed’s term as a Broadcom member is set to expire on 15 March 2023.

With this, applications were opened for membership at Broadcom under Section 6(b) of the Broadcasting Act, following which the president has sent the names of those who responded to the publication with their details.

According to Section 6(b) of the Broadcasting Act, 2010, the president is tasked with the responsibility of sending nominees for appointment to the Maldives Broadcasting Commission.

The names read out at parliament in the order submitted by President Solih are:

  • Shiham Mohamed Waheed, Malé registry 5143,
  • Shaan Salih Mohamed, native of Kudahuvadhoo island in Dhaalu atoll,
  • Hussain Amru, V. Roashan,
  • Safa Shafeeq, native to Meedhoo island in Dhaalu atoll

The four names forwarded by the president for appointment to Broadcom have since been sent to the People’s Majlis Committee on Independent Institutions for further review.

At a time Amjad’s term is nearing an end, member Ahmed Gais had also resigned back in January 2023.

The five names were sent for review that time following his resignation from the post on 8 January 2023, with which applications were opened for the vacancy.

Five nominees forwarded by President Solih on February 8. They were Aminath Nuzha, native to Hoarafushi island of Haa Alif atoll, Hussain Amru, Shaan Salih, Mariyam Nareemaan Shareef, native to Thinadhoo island of Gaaf Dhaal atoll, and Mariyam Muna, native to Feydhoo island of Seenu atoll.

Presently, there are six members in Broadcom, which is tasked with ensuring that broadcasters comply with the Broadcasting Act.

The current members are commission president Mariyam Waheeda, Vice President Mohamed Fazeen, members Amjad Waheed, Ali Yoosuf, Aminath Ameena and Shifla Ibrahim.
