The five nominees forwarded by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for appointment to the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom), have been sent to the People’s Majlis Committee on Independent Institutions for further review.
The five names were sent for review following the resignation of commission member Ahmed Gais from his post on 8 January 2023, with which applications were opened for the vacancy.
The names read out at parliament in the order submitted by President Solih are:
- Aminath Nuzha, native to Hoarafushi island of Haa Alif atoll,
- Hussain Amru, V. Roashan
- Shaan Salih Mohamed, native to Kudahuvadhoo island of Dhaal atoll
- Mariyam Nareemaan Shareef, native to Thinadhoo island of Gaaf Dhaal atoll, and
- Mariyam Muna, native to Feydhoo island of Seenu atoll.
According to Section 6(b) of the Broadcasting Act, 2010, the president is tasked with the responsibility of sending nominees for appointment to the Maldives Broadcasting Commission.
Presently, there are six members in Broadcom, which is tasked with ensuring that broadcasters comply with the Broadcasting Act.
The current members are commission president Mariyam Waheeda, Vice President Mohamed Fazeen, members Amjad Waheed, Ali Yoosuf, Aminath Ameena and Shifla Ibrahim.
