Maldives Police Service (MPS) has launched an investigation after skeletal remains washed ashore on Hulhumalé beach.

The police institution revealed that they launched the probe after what looked like human remains washed ashore on Hulhumalé beach, near the Redbull Park.

The authority received the report at around 5:38pm on Tuesday.

The skeletal remains have since been taken into police custody and further investigations are currently underway.

At a time the authority has launched further probes, reports have been circulating on some media platforms that the remains are human limbs.

The sighting comes not so long after a dead body was found afloat north west of Vemparu lagoon earlier this month.

Skeletal remains were also discovered in the dump site of Dhaandhoo island of Gaaf Alif atoll in August last year. Initial examinations of the bone at first sight revealed that the bone appeared to be old, however, authorities did not officially declare the remains, having belonged to a human.
