Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has disclosed that the Juvenile Justice Unit (Halfway House) project is well underway.

The Hoarafushi Juvenile Justice Unit is being built as a halfway house to provide rehabilitation and treatment for adolescents detained for various criminal actions. The facility is being built on a 10,000-square-foot block of land in Hoarafushi.

As such, MTCC notes that the project has seen 81 percent project progress. MTCC states that the company has completed foundation beam and column works, under the project.

The foundation of the building was laid on 29 June 2022, by the Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla.

Speaking at the groundbreaking function, Minister Imran noted the importance of a Juvenile Justice Unit in reintegrating juveniles who had been exposed to crime back into society and rebuild their lives.

The Ministry of Home Affairs, the previous year, estimated that the Juvenile Justice Unit in Hoarafushi will be in operation early, this year.
