The Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services has revealed that the children of Nishama Mohamed, 28, who was found lying on her bed on December 10, believed to have been murdered, are currently in a safe environment and that they are closely monitoring their condition.

The Gender Ministry revealed that they have confirmed that the children are in safe hands for now and that they will be monitoring their situation very closely.

Speaking to RaajjeMV, an official at the ministry revealed that the authority has been checking up on the children frequently and that their custody has been arranged within the family for now.

The ministry has also reported to have provided psychosocial support for the children and Nishama’s family.

The ministry has also given their assurance that they will be extending any support or assistance the family needs and is keeping a close eye on their needs and requirements.

Nishama’s body was transferred to Kulhudhuffushi City, in the same atoll, from where it was brought to capital Malé City on Monday. The authorities are currently working on sending the body abroad for autopsy examinations.

Her husband, Aboobakuru Faisal, was arrested and remanded not too long after the case came into the spotlight.

Credible sources reported that Aboobakuru had turned himself in, to the Kulhudhuffushi Police Station.

The murdered woman’s spouse has been pinned with allegations in connection with the homicide, due to several reasons particularly as the woman’s body was found with bruises and wounds. As such, witnesses report that Nishama’s neck, arms and face had signs of physical assault. The family has accused Nishama’s husband of physically assaulting her.

The family as well as credible sources have reported that the man had abruptly departed to Kulhudhuffushi City that morning, which was unusual.

Speaking to RaajjeMV, the island’s residents revealed that Nishama and her husband frequently quarreled and often spoke to each other disrespectfully. Island residents are also to have observed bruises and wounds on Nishama’s body when she was alive, however, no one said anything about it back then. Neighbors are to have been aware of the abuse as well.

While in detention Faisal attempted suicide inside the cell he has been remanded in. As such, he was found attempting to hang himself inside his prison cell, at around 11:15pm on December 12.

The suspect is currently receiving treatment in intensive care, at the Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital, revealed police. He is reportedly in critical condition and is still on ventilator support.

The police institution also revealed that they have since submitted the case to the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) as well as the National Integrity Commission (NIC) and that further investigations are currently underway.

MPS has since revealed that they had been monitoring the cell he was being kept in, every 10 minutes, and that there were no negligence on their part.

A letter has since been submitted to the People’s Majlis as well, to check whether there was any negligence on the police institution’s part. The letter was submitted by MP for Maduvvari constituency Adam Shareef Umar.

Faisal, native to Fenfushi island, was arrested in connection with the murder on December 11. He was remanded by 15 days as investigations proceed.

MPS also revealed the investigative bodies have decided to conduct an autopsy on the victim’s body.

Speaking to RaajjeMV regarding the suspected murder, Nolhivaram island council member and Information Officer Mohamed Mustafa revealed that the council received reports of the death at around 01:30pm on December 10.

Mustafa highlighted that Nishama's body was found at around 12:30pm that day and cited the family having reported that she was found dead, lying on her bed.

He also cited the island’s health center having revealed that Nishama was already dead when she was taken in.

The police institution has since launched an investigation in connection with the woman’s murder. Police media officials received reports of the death at around 12:30pm.

Police officers had attended the scene immediately after receiving the report.
