President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has concluded his visit to Faresmaathoda island in Gaaf Dhaal atoll, to attend the festivities to commemorate this year’s Fishermen’s Day.
The President was accorded a warm welcome upon his arrival in the island, on Sunday.
He concluded his brief trip and returned to Malé City on Monday.
During the visit, President Solih sat down with members of Faresmaathoda island council as well as the island’s Women’s Development Committee (WDC) for discussions regarding the socioeconomic development of the island.
Further, he met with the island’s fisher community on Sunday afternoon, where he inquired from them about their needs and shared information about the ongoing efforts by the administration to promote and develop the fisheries sector.
President Solih also observed a fish-filleting contest held as part of the Fishermen’s Day festivities.
He also toured the Fisheries Expo, an initiative of the Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources, and Agriculture, as part of the day’s activities.
At the expo, President Solih launched new products introduced by the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Ltd. (MIFCO) and Horizon Fisheries.
The President also addressed the island community during the official function held to mark the day, on Sunday evening.
Taking the podium at the ceremony, President Solih expressed commitment to resolve the issues and challenges facing the fisher community of Huvadhu atoll.
He shed light on some of the administration's initiatives and revealed plans to dedicate a 270-ton storage space and 120-ton brine freezing space to the atoll in 2023.
Maldives celebrated its National Fishermen’s Day in Gaafaru island of Kaafu atoll last year.
Maldives has been celebrating the National Fishermen’s Day on December 10, since 1981.
