Two individuals have been arrested in drug operations.
Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed that the arrests were made through drug operations launched as part of the institution’s efforts to curb drug smuggling and trafficking across the Maldives.
Operations were conducted in two different islands of Gaaf Alif atoll.
During an operation conducted at Villingili island of Gaaf Alif atoll on December 7, a Maldivian man was stopped and searched at the island harbor and was found in possession of 50 rubber packets stuffed with suspected narcotics.
The operation stemmed from intel reports that a group was smuggling drugs from the island, to Gadhdhoo island in Gaaf Dhaal atoll and was carried out jointly by the police intelligence unit and Gadhdhoo Police Station.
Arrested in connection with the case is a 37-year-old Maldivian man.
Further, another 37-year-old Maldivian man was arrested during an operation conducted in Kanduhulhudhoo island a day earlier.
The operation also stemmed from intel reports of drug smuggling and was carried out by the police intelligence officers and the Kanduhulhudhoo Police Station.
The man was stopped on the road and searched, upon which officers found a rubber packet filled with suspected narcotics, on him.
Both cases are currently being investigated by the police institution.
