The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has launched probes into a case of a minor falling victim to sexual assault.

The police institution on Wednesday revealed that they received reports of the child falling victim to sexual assault on Tuesday evening.

The case was reported from an island in the zone comprising of Gaaf Alif, Gaaf Dhaal, Gnaviyani and Seenu atolls.

The victim has been identified as a 12-year-old girl.

No arrests have been made yet in connection with the child sexual assault case, so far.

However, the police institution revealed that further investigations are currently underway.

Recent statistics by the Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Service reveal that a majority of cases of violence against children reported to them in September alone, were of sexual and physical abuse against children.
