Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives, Abdulla Shahid has met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Hayashi Yoshimasa.

Minister Shahid, met with the Japanese Foreign Minister during his visit to Tokyo as the special envoy of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to the state funeral of the assassinated Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe.

During the meeting, Minister Shahid conveyed condolences on behalf of President Solih and himself, on the untimely demise of Former Prime Minister Abe, who was an instrumental figure in the elevation of Maldives–Japan partnership during his premiership.  

Additionally, the meeting saw the two ministers reflecting on the close historical relationship between Maldives and Japan. Both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to further enhance the partnership bilaterally, through economic and development cooperation and in the international fora, in commemoration of the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The ministers also exchanged views on key areas of bilateral and multilateral interest.  

Minister Shahid was accompanied at the meeting by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Khaleel, Ambassador of Maldives to Japan Hassan Sobir, Deputy Ambassador Mohamed Ameeth Ahmed Manik and First Secretary Shafraz Rasheed.
