The Maldives Parliament voted in favor of the New Zealand’s proposal in the 144th IPU General Assembly.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is the global organization of national parliaments. The 144th IPU General Assembly is held in Nusa Dua, Indonesia.

Three proposals were submitted by Ukraine, Indonesia and New Zealand to be included as an emergency item in the agenda of the General Assembly, on March 21.

The proposal submitted by New Zealand was titled "Peaceful resolution of the war in Ukraine, respecting international law, the Charter of the UN and territorial integrity". The Maldives Parliament voted in favor of including this proposal as the emergency item in the agenda of the 144th IPU Assembly, and abstained on voting on the Indonesian proposal.

The New Zealand’s draft resolution called for support and action by parliaments in respect of international law, the Charter of UN and territorial integrity through peaceful resolution. The resolution asked the members of the IPU to catalyze parliamentary action towards peace and human rights.

Maldives Parliament stood in favor of respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, support for the UN Charter and Human Rights.

Ukraine withdrew their proposal in favor of the proposal submitted by New Zealand.

The emergency resolution received a large majority of the votes cast in a system based on criteria including country population, number of delegates present and gender inclusion. According to the IPU Statutes and Rules, only one emergency item may be included on the agenda at any given Assembly.

The debate took place on Tuesday 22 March.
