President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has briefed the council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) of Olhuvelifushi Island in Lhaviyani atoll, on the planned development projects for the island.
As part of his recent six-island tour of Lhaviyani atoll, the president sat down with the island council and WDC members at the Olhuvelifushi Resource Centre. He also met with the island residents, where he shared developmental plans for the island with them.
Council members engaged in discussions regarding the development plans for the island and briefed the president regarding concerns and most pertinent issues of the island community, including harbor expansion, addressing coastal erosion, improving banking services and issues faced due to land scarcity, including housing needs and space constraints at the secretariat of the council.
Further, the meeting saw WDC members expressing the need for designated office space.
President Solih in turn assured them that discussions will be held with relevant authorities in order to find amicable solutions for the issues at hand.
Discussions also touched down on the extension of the island’s health center and the introduction of additional services.
The president briefed the council on plans to develop a gym and noted that work will also be launched to improve the harbor in accordance with the council’s requests, after necessary technical studies.
His visit to Olhuvelifushi also saw the president touring the school and health center and engaging in talks with the management and staff.
Meeting with the island residents, the president shed light on the project to install turf in the football ground, upgrades to the powerhouse and the installation of solar panels with a capacity to generate 80 kilowatts of energy and highlighted that the administration aims to power the island through solar energy.
He went on to reveal that 10 classrooms will be built at the school, instead of the eight planned earlier, as part of efforts to accommodate single-session schooling.
