The foreign policy of Maldives is built upon defending sovereignty and human rights, says President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

This was announced during the presidential address, delivered during the inaugural sitting of the People’s Majlis on Thursday morning.

In his address, the president revealed that the country’s foreign policy is based upon protecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country, as well as defending human rights and it is also built upon upholding the principles of democracy

Highlighting that the reason Maldives’ candidature for the presidency of the United Nations General Assembly won support from all over the world is the foreign policy maintained by his administration and policies of the international community alike, President Solih revealed that the election of Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid as President of the 76th Session of the UNGA brought “great” honor to the island nation.

He further went on to add that globalization is a “force” created by the combination of nations and economic currents, President Solih stressed that it is not a force that can be “stopped” or “tamed”.

What we should do is reap the benefits of it, without being marginalized. We cannot pretend that globalization does not exist. We will continue to play the important role of the Maldives in ensuring the peace and safety of the Indian Ocean in close cooperation with our neighbors”
Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, President of Maldives

He took the opportunity to extend his gratitude to governments of India, China, Japan, United States, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and the European Union and other friendly nations for all the development assistance extended towards the Maldivian government.
