President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has pledged to provide land to permanent residents of the capital city in crucial need of housing by the end of his tenure, as promised.

This was announced during his presidential address, delivered during the inaugural sitting of the People’s Majlis on Thursday morning.

As such, highlighting that access to state resourced must be guaranteed for all, the president stated that the government aims to work together the reach the same destination.

With this being said, he stated that land will be provided to permanent residents of capital Malé City in crucial need of housing, as promised, by the end of the incumbent administration’s five-year tenure.

I will be starting work on this with you all in June this year. In addition, we will be reclaiming Giraavaru lagoon and will provide 2,000 plots of land to Malé permanent residents. Giraavaru lagoon will be connected to the Thilamalé bridge.”

The president noted that adequate housing and home ownership is the “single biggest” need of the people of the Maldives and stated that a total of 2,180 houses are being built through programmes to provide housing within outlying atolls.

President Solih went on to note that 82 individuals will be receiving more than MVR 42 million in loans through the government’s “Gedhoruveriyaa” loan scheme.

Highlighting that housing issues for the capital city’s residents are particularly concerning, the president stated that a project to build 5,000 housing units announced during the third presidential address, back in 2021, is currently underway in Hulhumalé and work on 2,000 additional housing units in Hulhumalé is also due to begin soon.

Further, the president highlighted that land will be given to the permanent residents of Malé, the government plans to provide 1,000 plots of land from Hulhumalé and at least 2,000 plots of land from Gulhifalhu to residents of Malé.
