Maldives has confirmed the first Covid-19 fatality of the year.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) revealed that the victim was identified as a Maldivian man 82 years of age.

He was pronounced dead by doctors at the Addu Covid Management Facility at around 2:30am on Tuesday.

This has pushed the country’s Covid-19 death toll to 263 and comes a week after the last fatality was confirmed, on December 28.

The last victim was an 86-year-old woman from Vilufushi island of Thaa atoll.

212 Covid-19 victims were reported last year.

The island nation reported the highest number of deaths in a single month since the pandemic began, during May 2021, when a total of 88 deaths were confirmed. 50 deaths were confirmed in June last year while 10 deaths were reported in July. In August, five Covid-19 patients succumbed to the virus, September also saw five Covid-19 fatalities. 12 Covid-19 fatalities were reported in October followed by seven in November. December also saw 12 Covid-19 fatalities.
