Councilors of Maafushi island in Kaafu atoll have shared the development needs of their community with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

As part of his brief visit to the island on Tuesday, the president sat down with the island councilors and members of the island’s Women’s Development Committee (WDC), where discussions were held regarding their most pertinent issues and development needs.

Issues raised by the councilors include the requirement of a proper waste management services, issues with beach erosion, staff shortage at the council as well as upgrades to the secretariat and proper management of the island mosques.

Discussions also revolved around the concerns linked to the harbor extension project and the development of additional classrooms at the island school.

WDC members briefed the president on the requirement of help in seeking financial aid and went on to share their concerns including the need for a volleyball court and futsal ground dedicated to women.

Listening to their concerns, the president assured them that discussions will be help with relevant authorities to find suitable solutions.

He also shared updates on the development projects planned for the island.

As part of his short visit the president also toured the Maafushi Prison and met with senior officials of the Maldives Correctional Services and inquired regarding efforts to improve conditions at the facility.

The president also inaugurated the new football grounds and watched part of a game where teams from the island and capital Malé City competed.

Solih visited the island’s health center and inquired about services there.

He was accompanied by a high-level delegation of government officials and Cabinet Ministers during the one-day visit.
