Discussions have been held on allowances for persons with disabilities.
The discussions took place during a meeting between President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and a group of visually-impaired persons and parents of such children.
Senior officials of the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) were in attendance as well.
Those who joined the meeting stressed that the allowances currently being provided for the disabled, are inadequate in comparison to current living conditions, with this being said, the president was urged to find a way to address this issue.
The president was also urged to increase the financial assistance provided to persons with disabilities, which would in turn ease their difficulties especially in receiving treatment and therapeutic services.
NSPA officials highlighted that regulations governing the establishment of a comprehensive national registry of persons with disabilities were recently finalized and publicized.
Currently, NSPA is in discussions with the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services to determine the "disability severity" of the recipients of the allowance. Following these discussions, necessary amendments will be made to the allowance.
The meeting saw President Solih assuring participants that he will work with the relevant authorities to find agreeable solutions to their concerns.
