President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and First Lady Fazna Ahmed have concluded their official trip to neighboring Sri Lanka.
Accompanied by a high-level delegation, the Maldivian First Couple departed on the two-day official visit on Monday.
Their visit was to officiate the opening ceremony of the Mahinda Rajapaksa Trophy or the Four Nations Cup, which was initially to be held on Monday. However, due to the bad weather in Sri Lanka, it was delayed to begin on Tuesday.
The opening match of the tournament saw Maldives and Sri Lanka tying with a 4 – 4 score, on Tuesday evening. Four countries are competing for the trophy; Maldives, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Seychelles.
During the trip, the president attended an official luncheon hosted by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, with whom he held extensive discussions on topics of mutual interest.
The Maldivian president also held a meeting where extensive discussions were held with the President of Sri Lanka, Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
During the meeting the leaders expressed both governments’ commitment to strengthen cooperation in the coming years.
The Four Nations Cup will proceed until November 19. The finals were initially to be held on November 17 however, it was delayed in order to make arrangements as FIFA President Giovanni Vincenzo "Gianni" Infantino is scheduled to make an appearance as the guest of honor in the final game.
