Tourist arrivals have topped 100,000 for a fifth month this ongoing year.
The Ministry of Tourism, through its latest daily statistics revealed that Maldives observed a total of 112,773 arrivals between October 1 – 25. Although it is a 1.5 percent decrease from the arrivals recorded in 2019, it is an increase of 572.2 percent in comparison to the arrivals recorded in the same period last year.
October’s daily arrival figure remains at an average of 4,000 as the month draws to an end. Stay period for tourists has been recorded at eight days.
Looking at the daily arrivals for the concluding month, a record breaking 6,197 arrivals were recorded on October 16.
October’s arrivals:
- 3,175 tourist arrivals were recorded on October 1
- 4,976 tourist arrivals were recorded on October 2
- 5,050 tourist arrivals were recorded on October 3
- 3,288 tourist arrivals were recorded on October 4
- 3,012 tourist arrivals were recorded on October 5
- 3,221 tourist arrivals were recorded on October 6
- 3,719 tourist arrivals were recorded on October 7
- 3,322 tourist arrivals were recorded on October 8
- 5,192 tourist arrivals were recorded on October 9
- 5,508 tourist arrivals were recorded on October 10

The total tourist arrivals figure from January 1 to October 25 has reached 983,635, with which Maldives is inching closer to its tourist arrivals target for the ongoing year.
Total arrivals for the year are a 135 percent increase from the arrivals recorded in 2020, a sluggish year for Maldives tourism due to border-closure. However, 2021’s arrivals so far are a decrease of 28 percent in comparison to the over one million arrivals recorded during the same period in 2019, a groundbreaking year for Maldives tourism.
Of the total arrivals figure recorded so far this year:
- 92,103 tourist arrivals were recorded during January
- 96,882 tourist arrivals were recorded during February
- 109,585 tourist arrivals were recorded during March
- 91,200 tourist arrivals were recorded during April
- 64,613 tourist arrivals were recorded during May
- 56,166 tourist arrivals were recorded during June
- 101,818 tourist arrivals were recorded during July
- 143,599 tourist arrivals were recorded during August
- 114,896 tourist arrivals were recorded during September
Maldives broke its monthly tourist arrivals records in August. September’s arrivals are the second highest recorded so far in 2021.
At a time the Minister of Tourism had revealed that arrivals from India are expected to grow to top the markets by the end of the year, India remains top source market for Maldives tourism currently dominating 22.8 percent of total arrivals.
Russia follows closely at second contributing 18.7 percent of the arrivals. Third comes Germany contributing 6.8 percent.
Other top tourism markets so far in 2021 include U.S. contributing 4.1 percent of arrivals, Saudi Arabia with 3.3 percent, Ukraine with three percent, Spain with three percent, United Kingdom with 2.9 percent, France with 1.9 percent and Kazakhstan with 1.9 percent.
During 2020, Maldives recorded 555,494 tourist arrivals, which was a drastic plunge from the previous year’s 1,702,887 arrivals.
Tourist arrivals have begun to bounce back with the easing of travel restrictions as well as safety measures against Covid-19.
Maldives is gearing up to mark 50 years since the tourism industry’s inception, in 2022, which is to be celebrated as the golden year of tourism in Maldives.
