Youth Awards 2021 have been presented to 10 recipients.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih presented the awards to the winners of this year’s Youth Awards during the National Youth Day celebrations held in Kulhudhuffushi City on Saturday night.

Youth Awards 2021 recipients:

  • Abdulla Yaman in the area of fisheries
  • Afaa Hussain in the area of environmental protection
  • Ahmed Abdul Kareem in the area of sports development
  • Aishath Thoifa in the area of volunteer work
  • Ali Fawaz in the area of agriculture
  • Ahmed Arushad in the area of business and economy
  • Hassan Faruhan Mohamed in the area of youth empowerment
  • Izzath Ahmed Nizar in the area of Dhivehi language and culture
  • Mariyam Shahuda in the area of empowering people with special needs
  • Nazim Hassan in the area of arts and craftsmanship

The award recognizes and encourages youth for their invaluable contributions for the progression of youth in various sectors and also has the purpose of recognizing the important role played by youth in national development and also inspires youth to be productive and responsible members of the society.

Speaking at the Saturday’s reception, the president said that the government has drafted a bill focusing on encouraging devoted young persons who love and respect the principles of Islam. The bill also aims to cultivate and nurture responsible and productive citizens. The government aims to guide youth towards achieving their aspirations and to facilitate prospective opportunities through the bill, which is expected to pave way for meaningful contributions towards the progress of the nation.

Solih also announced that his administration will initiate a nationwide mega housing project worth MVR 1.2 billion, to ease the housing situation across the country within the next two years.

With this being said, he noted that 400 of the housing units within the first year’s allocation will be reserved for Kulhudhuffushi City residents.

Solih also expressed pride in the successful negotiations with a foreign party to develop an additional 1,000 housing units in the northern city, which have been completed since.

During his trip to the northern city, the president also attended a music show hosted to mark the National Youth Day.

October 22 was declared as National Youth Day, during 2019. The decision stemmed from recommendations from President Solih’s Cabinet of Ministers who highlighted that the day was significant as the act enabling voting rights for Maldivians above 18 years of age, was passed.

A delegation of cabinet ministers and senior government officials joined the president during the trip.
