The People’s Majlis has approved Maldives’ participation in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee reviewed a request by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, seeking approval for the island nation to join the international organization.
The committee’s report was passed during Monday’s parliament sitting where 28 lawmakers unanimously voted in favor.
The global organization’s work revolves around effective conservation of the nature as well as sustainable uses of natural resources. It carries a mission of influencing, encouraging and assisting societies worldwide to “conserve nature and to ensure that any use to natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable”.
A total of 91 countries globally have joined the organization, alongside over 1,400 organizations of 170 countries.
IUCN was established in 1948 and has played a key role in the implementation of numerous global interventions on the conservation of nature since.
