Ahmed Jazeel, who attacked Mariyam 'Mandhy' Zubair at the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s head office in Sosun Magu, has been remanded for 15 days.
Mariyam, who is the mother of south-Galolhu constituency MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem, and works at the MDP secretariat sustained a severe head wound from the attack.
Her son, MP Meekail has stated that the attack had no political intent, but was simply the attack of somebody under the influence of drugs.
Jazeel, who was an employee at the office, used a metal chain to attack Mariyam. In addition to her, another employee was also injured.
The Criminal Court had remanded Jazeel for 15 days, therefore, with no further remand extensions, his remand will expire on September 19.
The main-ruling party has urged Maldives Police Service to conduct a full and thorough investigation into the attack. MDP had also spoken out on the matter stating that the party will not tolerate such harmful malicious acts, and called for the police to investigate and take the necessary action as soon as possible.
