Individual attempting to smuggle items into Maafushi prison, arrested
Items include 50 smartphones, 42 feature phones, 109 chargers and 77 USB cables.
The operation was conducted by police, acting on intelligence received.
Such items being discovered are being confiscated by police.

An individual who attempted to smuggle a number of items into Maafushi prison, has been arrested,

Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed revealed this via Twitter, with details of the items.

The seized items comprise of 50 smart phones, 42 feature phones, 109 phone chargers, 77 USB cables, 65 headsets, 49 Dhiraagu SIM cards, 12 Ooredoo SIM cards, 2 packs of cutter blades, 10 Miswak (Iraak sticks) and other items.

The operation was carried out jointly by police officers stationed in Maafushi and Maldives Correctional Service, early Monday morning.

As well as seizing items through operations as such, items discovered in the prison itself are also being handed over to police.

As per the latest statistics by Corrections, a number of narcotics and electronics were seized through operations in 2021.
