Maldives coronavirus death toll has been pushed to 226, with the fifth fatality of the month confirmed on Saturday.

Health Protection Agency (HPA) identified the deceased as a 90-year-old Maldivian man. He is the fourth Covid-19 victim reported this week.

The Covid-19 patient was admitted at the Gaaf Dhaal Covid Management Facility before being declared death by doctors at 6:30pm on Saturday.

This comes less than a week after Maldives confirmed the latest fatality, when a 49-year-old local woman being treated for the fatal infection at Hulhumalé Medical Facility (HMF) succumbed to the virus. Hours earlier, a 92-year-old local woman also succumbed to complications of the virus at Addu Covid Management Facility.

Saturday’s fatality is the fifth reported in August.

After 18 days of no fatalities linked to Covid-19, HPA reported the death of a 75-year-old local woman being treated for coronavirus at Hulhumalé Medical Facility (HMF) on Sunday morning at 11:20am.

Of the 226 deaths linked to coronavirus, 176 have been reported thus far in 2021.

The island nation reported the highest number of deaths in a single month since the pandemic began, during May 2021, when a total of 88 deaths were confirmed. 50 deaths were confirmed in June while 10 deaths were reported in July.

Maldives reported its first Covid-19 fatality in April 2020.
