The elections commission has granted permission for Abdulla Kamaludeen to work on forming his own political party.
Vice President of Elections Commission, Ismail Habeeb stated that the Election Commissions decided to permit Kamaludeen to create his own political party under the name “Gaumee Ehbaivanthakamuge Party”.
Kamaludeen has since thanked them for this opportunity.
At first, it was concluded that Kamaludeen would not be granted permission to create his own party. This was decided since Kamaludeen was still registered as a member of MRM. The Elections Commissions (EC) stated that Kamaludeen's request to create his own party was rejected because the conditions that a person forming his own party was not fulfilled by him, therefore making him an ineligible candidate for a party leader.
EC also said that they have received no notice of Kamaludeen's resignation from MRM, from Kamaludeen himself nor the party.
Kamaludeen, who served as the home minister during Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's presidency, as well as being a member of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) and Jumhooree Party, has participated in many of Maldives Reform Movement (MRM)’s activities. In his statement regarding the formation of his own party, Kamaludeen proclaimed that implementation of the rights of people requires a lot of reformation. Furthermore, he adds that his party would be the introduction to such a development.
Upon discussion with individuals of similar beliefs, Kamaludeen has put in his request to be able to form his new party, “Gaumee Ehbaivanthakamuge Party”, or “National Solidarity Party”.
As well as Kamaludeen, MP for Dhagethi, Mohamed Nazim (Colonel Nazim) had also previously begun work to form his own party, garnering over 3,000 signatures.
