Daily cases of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic reported across Malé City between 6pm Thursday and 6pm Friday have increased to 30, as Maldives continues to report a majority of new infections from outlying atolls.
107 new coronavirus cases were confirmed nationwide by sundown on Friday, according to the latest statistics publicized by the Health Protection Agency (HPA).
These were confirmed from 5,156 samples tested for the virus over the past 24 hours.
30 new cases were confirmed in the Greater Malé Region, deemed the Covid-19 epicenter of Maldives, whereas 56 were detected in outlying atolls, 14 were from operational resorts, six from islands under development and a single case from an island reserved for industrial purposes.
With these developments, Maldives coronavirus case tally currently sits at 77,309, with the island nation’s active coronavirus case tally rising to 2,595 from 2,541 by sundown on Friday.
HPA also confirmed 52 additional recoveries from the infection in the last 24 hours, meaning that the total number of recoveries observed in the island nation over the past year has surged to 74,481.
One more Covid-19 patient was discharged from the hospital, meaning that the hospital admissions have dropped to 13.
The country's death toll from Covid-19 stands at 221 with the last one reported on Thursday evening.
The Covid-19 caseload began spiking in the beginning of May once again, not long after Maldives was able to control a spike in cases into the beginning of the year. The fourth wave was confirmed after authorities lifted the measures in place in time for the fasting month of Ramadan 1442 as well as the Local Council and Women’s Development Committee elections held in mid-April.
This prompted authorities to strengthen safety measures and restrictions across the nation. However in early July a number of these measures were eased in time for Eid-Al-Adha and Independence Day holidays.
Maldives remains in a state of public health emergency since 12 March 2020 which was last extended to expire on 2 August.
