The deafening explosion head in the Maldives capital Malé City’s suburbs early Friday, was from a welding accident.

Maldives Police Service (MPS) received reports of the loud explosion-like sound at around 12:15am on Friday and police officers stationed in Hulhumalé were dispatched to the area immediately. The area was cordoned off to the public then and there, but was later opened up in the afternoon.

The explosion was reported from Bougainvillea Magu and no injuries were reported in the accident.

Police have confirmed that the explosion sound was linked to a welding accident from a house in the region.

An eyewitness who told RaajjeMV that the sound was deafening, added that they saw a flame at the same time.

This comes at a time Maldives security officers have been on high alert, since the terrorist attack on the life of Speaker of Parliament and Former President Mohamed Nasheed on May 6.
