Maldives reported 114 new Covid-19 cases on Friday, a significant reduction from the previous day’s numbers.
According to the information publicized by the Health Protection Agency (HPA), most of Friday’s reported cases are from residential islands.
As such, 88 cases were confirmed from inhabited islands, while 18 cases were reported from the Greater Male’ Region, nine from resorts and five from islands under development.
Most of Thursday’s 217 cases -92 to be exact- were from a single island, Rah Faru Huraa which is under development.
Friday’s 114 cases push the country’s total to 75,736. And with the recovery of additional 97 patients, total recoveries stand at 72,930. There are currently 2,578 active cases in the island nation.
While 11 people are receiving treatment at hospitals, Maldives has reported 216 deaths from the virus.
Authorities strengthened Covid-19 measures in mid-May following a surge in coronavirus cases. As the country’s Covid-19 situation improved, authorities eased these measures and while Eid-al-Adha holidays are ahead, fully vaccinated individuals can now travel between islands without having to quarantine.
While they are to provide a negative PCR test result to travel, this has led to an increase in PCR testing. Hence, HPA announced that they are giving priority to those exhibiting symptoms as well as direct contacts.
Friday’s 114 cases are from the 7,101 samples tested within 24 hours.
HPA urges citizens to have a safe Eid, and to follow safety guidelines in order to prevent a fifth wave of Covid-19.
