A resolution submitted regarding an increase in reports of sexual assault and rape cases across the Maldives, has been forwarded to the People’s Majlis committee on human rights and gender.
Submitted by the MP for Maduvvari constituency Adam Shareef, the resolution was forwarded for committee review during Monday’s parliament sitting, with the unanimous votes of 32 members. Six MPs abstained from the vote.
Submitting the case, MP Shareef revealed that authorities must focus their efforts on reducing such cases and bring the perpetrators to justice. The lawmaker urged authorities to make sure perpetrators of such acts are brought to justice, and taken action on, as soon as possible.
The parliamentarian went on to note that such cases are increasing to concerning levels in the island nation and that there are delays in taking the required action as well as serving justice in such cases.
We have observed a delay in pressing charges in rape, sexual assault cases, sweeping such cases under the rug in some instances as well as a delay in prosecution, which in turn leads to such cases increasing. Due to this threats increase among the society and people are afraid to go out on the streets as well”Adam Shareef, MP for Maduvvari constituency![]()
MP Shareef urged the government and relevant authorities to make haste in taking the required action to serve justice for victims of sexual assault, abuse and rape, under an organized system.
