A local man arrested for threatening to bomb the People’s Majlis has been released.

While the 28-year-old was arrested on May 28 after asserting that the People’s Majlis building needs to be blown up in a Facebook comment, Criminal Court remanded him the same day.

Police said that he was released following discussions with the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office after the conclusion of investigation.

The authority stated that this is an act that supports terrorism and that such cases will be investigated as serious offenses. It also revealed that the seriousness of the threat the comment poses is amplified as it came at a time a group of people had carried out an assassination attempt on the life of Speaker and former President Mohamed Nasheed.

Security levels inside and near the People’s Majlis building were strengthened following intel reports of a security threat to parliament, especially since the assassination attempt on the speaker on May 6.

There have recently been threats to the Indian High Commission and Chinese Embassy buildings in the capital, which prompted authorities to strengthen security measures in both areas as well.
