Speaker and former President Mohamed Nasheed who was injured in an assassination attempt back in May, has traveled to the United Kingdom for further treatment.

The former president was the target of a remote controlled bomb in Maldives congested capital Male’ City on May 6. He had just left his house and was about to get into his car when a bomb attached to a motorbike exploded.

While he was rushed to ADK Hospital immediately, Nasheed underwent 16 hours of life-saving surgery to remove shrapnel from his lungs, abdomen and liver. He traveled to Germany for further treatment on May 13 where he was treated at the Bundeswehr hospital in Berlin.

In an announcement on Friday, the Office of the former president said that his doctors at Bundeswehr had referred Nasheed to specialist in the UK.

The Office also thanked the hospital’s doctors and employees for the care provided to Nasheed, as well as the Maldives’ Honorary Consul in Germany, Maldives Ambassador to Germany as well embassy employees in both Germany and UK for the assistance.

While July 6 will mark two months since the attack on the country’s first democratically elected president, incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih this Tuesday announced that investigators have identified eight suspects with links to the attack.

He said that investigations into four of these suspects have concluded and will be sent for prosecution “soon”.

Police have revealed the identities of five of these suspects; Mujaz Ahmed, 21; Thahumeen Ahmed, 32; Ahmed Adhuham Rasheed, 25; Ahmed Fathih, 23; and Ali Haisham 27.

The president assured that he will continue to closely monitor the investigations to ensure justice for the former president.
