Shazail Shiyam, Managing Director at Maldive Gas, has been reinstated with his suspension revoked after nearly two years.
He was suspended in October 2019, following complaints to the “Zero Tolerance to Corruption” Portal established by the President’s Office.
At the time of Shazail’s suspension, parliament’s committee on state owned enterprises was conducting an inquiry over allegations that the Maldives Gas MD was violating procurement procedures for his own benefit. The matter was investigated by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) as well.
Shazail repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, even sending a letter to the committee on state owned enterprises.
The Maldives Gas MD’s suspension was lifted and he was subsequently reinstated on June 20, after ACC’s probe failed to find any proof to the claims against him.
While the senior government posts were divided among the four parties with the ruling coalition, Shazail was appointed as Maldive Gas MD through a Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) slot.
He had previously served as a Deputy Fisheries Minister and Deputy Tourism Minister during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen.
