Maldives reported 590 new Covid-19 cases on Saturday.
While this pushes the country’s coronavirus tally to 67,538, the 1,603 recoveries reported on Saturday pushes total recoveries to 47,333. There are currently 20,014 active Covid-19 cases in the Maldives.
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) said that 461 of the new cases announced on Saturday are from samples collected from 4th to 5th June, meaning the remaining cases are backlog samples.
389 of the cases reported on Saturday are from the country’s Covid-19 epicenter, capital Male’ City, while 195 were reported from residential islands and six from resorts.
191 patients are currently receiving treatment at hospitals, 22 less than the previous day.
The island nation has seen a total of 182 deaths to Covid-19 since the virus was discovered, out of which five were reported on Saturday.
While the government began easing Covid-19 restrictions last year following a decline in cases, there has since been a spike, especially last month forcing authorities to strengthen Covid-19 restrictions especially in the capital. This includes an unofficial lockdown of the city, with a curfew imposed from 4pm to 8am and residents requiring permits to be out on the roads even during the remaining time.
