The government of India has announced the decision to open a consulate general in southernmost Addu City.

The decision was announced after the neighboring country’s internal cabinet approved the establishment of a consulate general in the southernmost city of Maldives, during a Union Cabinet meeting held on Monday, chaired by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The High Commission of India in the Maldives revealed that the establishment of embassies, consulates and high commissions is a major pillar of diplomatic relations between countries.

Maldives already has a high commission in Delhi, as well as a consulate in Trivandrum of India.

The High Commission of India went on to reveal that the decision has not been finalized yet, both by the government of India and the government of Maldives, adding that it is still under consideration. Should the governments of both countries grant approval, a location of the consulate will be decided and residents of the southernmost city will be able to apply for visas and consular services directly in Addu City.

The consulate general will be established with the aim to boost economic and commercial ties between the south of Maldives and India as well as to assist hundreds of teachers and nurses native to India, working in the south of Maldives.

It is also expected to further enhance ties between Maldives and India, specifically development activities between both countries, as the consulate’s establishment has the purpose of boosting ties between the people and business owners of both countries.

Currently, projects worth USD 200 million are being executed in Addu City, funded by the government of India, including the reclamation of Gan Airport redevelopment projects, development of roads as well as eight high-impact grant projects including the establishment of fish plants, eco-tourism zones and a rehabilitation facility.

The incumbent administration aims to make the southernmost city an economic and commercial hub across Maldives. Once the projects are implemented, it will pave way for enhanced connectivity between India and south of Maldives.
