Maldives Police Service (MPS) is investigating Thursday evening's explosion attack as an act of terrorism that targeted Former President and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.

In a press release issued on Friday afternoon, the police institution revealed that they have placed "urgent" priority in the investigation and that all the necessary resources available for investigation and forensic teams are being utilized in the probe.

Further police revealed that two experts from the Australian Federal Police will arrive in the Maldives on Saturday morning to join the probe, which has been joined by two UNODC technical experts from the UK in the Maldives as well.

The statement reads that all evidence points towards a deliberate act of terror targeting Nasheed.

Following the blast, officers of the police institute as well as the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) have been active on the streets to ensure the safety and security of the public and to enhance protective measures in the region.

Police have urged the public to contact them through 9704000 if they have any information regarding the explosion or suspicious activity in the region at the time of the incident.

MPS revealed that the anonymity of the individuals who report to them will be maintained.

Following the blast which took place a little past 8:30pm on Thursday, Maldives Police Service (MPS) had  risen the Police alert level to Level 3 as officers deployed in the capital run investigations. The police institution will be hosting a presser at 2pm on Friday in connection to the blast.

Nasheed is currently in stable condition after having undergone three successful surgeries due to injuries attained in the blast. Another important procedure still remains, ADK Hospital revealed via its latest Tweets, adding that a specialty team of doctors have been attending to the former president since he was rushed to the hospital. Nasheed was initially treated for flesh wounds, however doctors found the need for further surgeries through an assessment made.
