Some parliamentarians and members of the cabinet stand to lose their seats upon the completion of probes into the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption scandal, says Former President and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.

During Monday’s parliament sitting, the speaker noted that details of the MMPRC embezzlement cannot be veiled from the public as long as he remains as speaker, no matter how big of a person the accused may be.

Responding to the letter addressed to parliament by MP for west-Henveiru constituency, Hassan Latheef regarding the MMPRC scandal, Nasheed stated that the Asset Recovery Commission has already listed charges against 270 individuals. He noted that the charges will proceed uninterruptedly and that some parliamentarians and cabinet members stand to lose their positions upon completion.

Some honorable members may lose their seats, some may lose their positions and other may face other consequences. However, the incumbent administration as well as parliament was established to seek out the truth. As long as I remain speaker the MMPRC embezzlement cannot be kept secret”.

The speaker expressed assurance that he will receive the required support from lawmakers in bringing justice, noting that until the investigation is complete, everyone is responsible for the embezzled USD 70 million.

The Asset Recovery Commission earlier revealed that the funds embezzled from state coffers through MMPRC was used for political gains and investigations so far indicate that MVR 3.4 billion is linked to the scandal.
