Those who were elected to seats for the Male' City Council in the Local Council Elections have been expressing competitive hopes of being the capital city's Deputy Mayor alongside Mayor-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

The opposition's Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) were able to win 14 seats from Male' City during the Local Council elections, which were held in the Maldives on 10 April 2021. While the opposition were successful in claiming many seats in the elections for themselves, Deputy Leader of the People's National Congress (PNC) Ibrahim Shujau remains a favorite for opposition supporters for the position of Male' City's Deputy Mayor.

Shujau won the council seat for the Hulhumale' constituency in the elections, and has been noted by opposition parties as one of the most stalwart supporters of jailed ex-president Yameen Abdul Gayyoom. Supporters have been campaigning for Shujau to be appointed Deputy Mayor of Male' City on social media platforms following the elections.

While Shujau has set his sights on being the Deputy Mayor of Male; City. so has Nahula Ali, who was elected to the Male' City Council from the Villimale' constituency. Nahula made the announcement in a letter, which detailed future hopes for the opposition in securing the votes of women and youth, and also noted that the Mayor and Deputy Mayor duo for Male' City had always been a partnership between men and women.

In addition to this, the counselor-elect for the South-Maafannu constituency Abdulla Nasir (Allo) has also come forward with a tweet expressing his interest post of Deptuy Mayor for Male' City, stating that he would be making good use of the opportunity given to him by serving citizens.

Including the seat of Mayor, there are 19 seats in the Male' City Council. Opposition candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is the Mayor-elect of Male' City, and the Deputy Mayor will be chose from a vote conducted among other members of the council. With the seat of Mayor, opposition party PPM were able to secure a total of 14 seats in the Local Council Elections from the Male' City Council.
